Trying to solve these problems can make our heads spin and leave us stuck in thought. I remember how Calculus used to scare me during my college days, almost like a language I couldn’t understand. But as the year progressed, things started to click, and I gained a better grasp of it. Now, I see Calculus in a different light, as a useful tool rather than a daunting subject.
What if the solution to our big questions isn’t as complicated as we think? What if the answers are found in simple, everyday moments? In this blog, I’m going to talk about two very different ways of understanding the world, Calculus and Zen. At first glance, Calculus is all about complicated math that helps us understand things like space and time, while Zen is a spiritual way of being focused on the present moment. But when we look closely, we see that both Calculus and Zen can help us understand the world in their own special ways, and they can even work together to give us a fuller picture of life.
Understanding Calculus Through the Idea of Limits
Calculus can seem really complicated with its tough concepts, strange symbols, and hard-to-solve equations. But if we simplify it, at its heart lies the simple yet deep idea of ‘limits.’ This concept helps us connect the very small to the very big, and the simple to the complicated.

Picture a mountain range. From a distance, it looks like one big, scary, and complex structure. How can we understand what it’s really made of? The best way is to get up close and look at each rock and crack. The true nature of the mountain is the sum of all these smaller parts. Calculus works in a similar way. If you go through life only focusing on analyzing things like in calculus, but you forget to actually experience them as in Zen, you end up with a life that feels empty and mechanical. On the other hand, a life full of Zen’s mindfulness but lacking in calculus’ analytical power would feel aimless and random.
So, the real beauty comes when you combine both. As you go through life’s complexities, these two perspectives teach you to both analyze and appreciate each moment. Calculus provides the tools to navigate life’s complexities, while Zen gives us the wisdom to enjoy its simple beauties.
